Local SEO

The Winnipeg local SEO checklist

When someone in Winnipeg searches "furnace repair near me" or "roofer Winnipeg," Google shows a map with three businesses before it shows any websites. Those three spots, the map pack, decide who gets the call. Here is what actually determines whether your business is in it.

How local search really works

Google ranks local businesses on three things: relevance (does your listing match the search), distance (are you near the searcher), and prominence (does Google believe you are established and trusted). You cannot change distance. Relevance and prominence are entirely in your control, and most Winnipeg businesses have never touched either.

The ten-point checklist

1. Claim your Google Business Profile

Unclaimed profiles rank poorly and cannot be edited. Claim it, verify ownership, and fill in every field: categories, services, hours, service areas, attributes, and a business description that names your services and neighborhoods.

2. Pick the right primary category

"Plumber" and "Plumbing supply store" are different categories with different rankings. Choose the category that matches what customers search for, then add relevant secondary categories.

3. Get the name, address, and phone number consistent everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number must match exactly across your website, Google, Facebook, Yelp, and every directory. Inconsistencies confuse Google and cost you rankings. This is the most common fix we make in audits.

4. Add real photos, regularly

Businesses with photos get dramatically more clicks and direction requests. Add photos of your team, your work, and your vehicles, and add new ones monthly. Stock photos do not count.

5. Collect Google reviews on purpose

Review count, rating, and recency all feed prominence. Ask every satisfied customer, make it easy with a direct link, and respond to every review. A business with 80 recent reviews will outrank a better business with 6 old ones.

6. Put your service areas on your website

If you serve St. Boniface, Charleswood, and Transcona, say so on your site with dedicated content. Google matches searcher location to business service areas, and vague "serving Winnipeg" copy leaves rankings on the table.

7. Make sure your site works on mobile

Almost all "near me" searches happen on phones. A slow or broken mobile site does not just lose visitors, it signals to Google that the listing behind it is low quality.

8. Get listed in the right directories

Consistent listings on the major directories (Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Yellow Pages, BBB) reinforce your business information. Skip the spammy directory blasts; a dozen correct listings beat a hundred junk ones.

9. Publish local content

Content about Winnipeg neighborhoods, local projects, and local questions you get asked builds relevance no competitor can copy. One useful local article a month compounds.

10. Track the map pack, not just your website

Check where you rank for your money searches from different parts of the city. Rankings vary by searcher location, so a single check from your office tells you almost nothing.

What this costs: everything on this list except your time is free. Local SEO is the highest-return marketing most service businesses can do, because it captures customers who are already looking to buy.
