7 signs your website is losing you customers

We audit websites for a living. After enough audits, a pattern shows up: most business websites leak customers in the same seven places. None of them require a rebuild to fix. Here is the checklist we run through on every single audit, in the order that usually matters most.

1. Nobody can tell what you do in 5 seconds

Open your homepage and start a timer. If a stranger cannot say what you sell and who it is for within five seconds, you are losing the visitors who arrived ready to buy. The fix is boring and effective: a headline that names the service and the customer, not a clever tagline.

2. There is no clear next step

Every page needs one obvious action: call, book, get a quote. We regularly audit sites where the phone number is in the footer, the contact page is two clicks away, and the homepage ends with a paragraph instead of a button. Each missing next step is a visitor who meant to contact you and did not.

3. It falls apart on a phone

Most local searches happen on phones, often on mobile data. Text that is too small, buttons too close together, and pages that take six seconds to load are the norm, not the exception. Open your site on your own phone, on data, and use it like a customer. What annoys you is costing you jobs.

4. The content is years old

Photos from 2019, a "new services" banner from 2021, staff who left two years ago. Stale content tells visitors the business might be stale too. It also tells Google the site is not maintained, which quietly hurts rankings.

5. No proof anywhere

Reviews, before-and-after photos, named clients, certifications. Visitors decide whether to trust you in seconds, and proof is what moves them. If your best reviews live only on Google and never appear on your site, you are making visitors do the research you should have done for them.

6. Google cannot find you properly

Unclaimed or outdated Google Business Profile. No location pages. Wrong hours. These do not feel like "website" problems, but they are the reason competitors show up in the map pack and you do not. For service businesses, this one leak is often bigger than the other six combined.

7. You cannot measure any of it

If you cannot say how many leads your website produced last month, you cannot tell whether fixes are working. Basic analytics and call tracking cost almost nothing and turn every future decision from a guess into a measurement.

The honest version: most of these are afternoon fixes, not projects. The expensive part is not knowing which ones apply to you. That is what an audit is for.

What to do this week

  • Run the 5-second test on your homepage with someone who has never seen it.
  • Open your site on your phone, on mobile data, and try to contact yourself.
  • Claim and complete your Google Business Profile if you have not.
  • Add your three best reviews to your homepage.
  • Put one clear call to action on every page.

Do those five and you have fixed the majority of what we flag in audits. For the rest, there is the full audit: we go through all of this plus speed tests, search rankings, and ad waste, and hand you a written report ranked by impact. It takes 15 minutes of your time and costs nothing.
